English Summary

At a glance

Our organization was established by a dozen enthusiastic nature-lover in 1991 as "Youth Conservationist Association of Hajdúböszörmény". Our activities have continuously increased and become more diverse since then, adjusting to the changing global and local expectations. Though we originally focused on nature protection, later this was supplemented with environmental protection, organizing social participation, regional development and ecotourism. Mainly this growth led to a new name in 2006 when we switched to "Zöld Kör - member of Friends of the Earth Hungary". We strive for a living, livable, and sustainable future at both local, national and international levels.

We work in Northern Great Plain region, in the eastern part of Hungary. The town of Hajdúböszörmény, home to 32,000 people, is only 20 km away from region centre Debrecen. Our historic town is regarded as a traditionalist and hospitable settlement. Böszörmény was the chief town of the former Hajdú County for a long
time - the county got its name from "Hajdús" (a herdsman ethnical group) participating in the freedom fights led by Prince István Bocskai.

Our mission

"For a living, livable, and sustainable future!"

We want to establish a living, livable, and sustainable future, through environmental and nature conservation activities. Our tools are attitude forming and partnership.

Introduction

The organization was founded in autumn 1991 under the name "Youth Conservationist Association of Hajdúböszörmény". Originally we concentrated on environmental education and nature protection, and our programs have been realized in the catchment area of our town, Hajdúböszörmény. Over the years, step-by-step, we joined nature and consumer protecting, regional development, ecotourism, and community and social participation strengthening efforts.

Our group is driven by a chairmanship of five members which has a meeting every quarter year. The work of the organization is legally and financially supervised by a three man board of inquiry. In the nearly twenty years past about 250 people joined us, while thousands attended our events and programs.

As of today, we have two well-equipped offices. Our headquarters are on the main square of Hajdúböszörmény, and the environmental consultancy office is
in the centre of Debrecen, right next to the Environmental Inspectorate. We also own a campsite by River Bodrog (in Bodrogolaszi) where we started organizing calm-water tours.

On the national level we cooperate with regional environmental authorities and many environmental and regional development NGOs, as well as local councils and educational institutes.

On the international level we maintain relations mainly with the members of Friends of the Earth Europe. Our international cooperation programs are planned and realized with the neighboring countries. We arrange joint projects with Ukrainian, Romanian and Slovakian civil organizations, and we have – and probably will – run an exchange program with Transylvanian environmental organizations.

Our varied scope of duties is fulfilled with the aid of a dozen volunteers.

We monthly issue an e-newsletter to our members and supporters, and occasionally a printed version is spread to the households of Hajdúböszörmény as a part of our local campaigns. With our periodical Northern Great Plain Regional Civil Newsletter we inform primarily the civil organizations in the region on current nature protection and regional development issues.
